When people think of a holiday in Africa, chances are Zimbabwe hasn’t been top of mind for most. But my recent return trip to this beautiful southern African nation refreshed my perspective. I was last here twenty years ago as a backpacker, and I often think back fondly of that adventurous trip. And while the country has come a long way, it’s also kept many of the things that make it such a neat experience. There’s far too much to see for … [Read more...]

When booking private flights, I’m usually gearing up to land and explore somewhere beautiful. If you’re looking for a magnificent view on the ground and from the air, these flight routes will provide you with the … [Read more...]

Victoria Falls – April 2014
Victoria Falls is best seen from both the Zimbabwe and Zambia sides of the river. The Victoria Falls Bridge crosses the Zambezi River which forms the border for both countries. From the Zimbabwe side you can actually walk across the bridge and technically enter Zambia without going through the border post. Charles Darwin's son, Professor George Darwin officially opened the bridge in 1905. What has to be one of the shortest International flights … [Read more...]
2 Awesome Places I Got To Tick Off My Bucket List
I’ve had an overseas bucket list since I was 18 years of age and I’m still nowhere close to completing the list, though I figure If I get to have 15 countries under my belt I’d be a very happy guy. So far I have visited 8 countries (Peru, Mexico, Philippines, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Mongolia, UAE and Brazil)…my highlights of those trips were: Trekking the Inca Trail in Peru Staying in a Yurt in Mongolia Sand dune boarding in … [Read more...]
The Dangerous First Descent of the Zambezi
It was Valentine’s Day when I first saw the river; it was love at first sight. Along with a party of tour operators, I had been shuttled between game parks and hotel lobbies for days, all leading up to this: Victoria Falls. While the other occupants of the Land Rover pressed for a glimpse of the great falls upstream, I looked the other way, out of habit. Some 350 feet below the bridge we were driving over, a mighty river coiled and cursed through … [Read more...]
Ngoma Safari Lodge Botswana
Ngoma Safari Lodge is located on the edges of Chobe National Park in Botswana. This fairly new property opened in May 2011 and was officially dedicated in July 2011 with his Excellency, Botswana's President Seretse Khama Ian Khama attending the opening ceremonies. This is isolated luxury at its finest and rawest; the lodge is accessible by any of 3 dirt roads - which are more like 4wd tracks among the bush - there are no signs and you must … [Read more...]
Enjoying Victoria Falls…as in the Waterfalls
Just like with the Iquazu Falls in South America where you can enjoy views from two countries (Brazil & Argentina), its the same here between Zimbabwe and Zambia. We entered the Falls National Park on the Zimbabwe side and surprisingly had the trails and viewpoints all to ourselves for the better part of 3 hours. These are among the world's greatest waterfalls - you can walk well over a kilometer to see their span. A highlight of a walk here … [Read more...]
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
We are loving the little town of Victoria Falls - US currency is the name of the game here - even the ATM's spit out US dollars. However, unlike the currency in the USA most of the bills here are blackened beyond believe - some bills are just tattered smears of smudge - even though they are only a few years old! One lady in a wheelchair told us to be very careful at night in regards to mosquitoes - she said she's had malaria so many times … [Read more...]
Flight from Jo’burg to Victoria Falls Zimbabwe
On BA operated Comair flight now from JO'berg to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. I asked FA what my choices were for lunch as the announcement as often is the case on these small aircraft was garbled and coupled with the flight noise was impossible to hear. Her answer was "they are delicious" - I asked again, "delicious" was the answer repeated. Oh boy - vegetarian lasagne was all I was given. Edible - that's all I will say. Certainly much better … [Read more...]
