The G.A.P Top 5: Travel Memories
This was enormously difficult for me. First of all, choosing a top five is never easy. Ranking was totally out of the question! And then condensing days and days of vivid and rich experiences into a little summarized blurb was near impossible. I could go on and on but here are 5 of my fondest travel experiences. Montezuma, Costa Rica Body-surfed for breakfast after having watched the spectacular sunrise through my tattered tent door then … [Read more...]
Los Angeles, CA – Thai Town
Los Angeles, CA - Thai Town is the center for the Thai Community in Los Angeles. The Thai population in Los Angeles is the largest community of Thai people outside of the Thailand. This region backs up against and in some cases blends in with "Little Armenia". Many Thai restaurants and shops are scattered along about a 1.5 mile stretch of Hollywood Blvd, just east of the 101. To get to Thai town take the 101 to the Hollywood Blvd exit and exit … [Read more...]
Palms Thai Restaurant, Hollywood, CA – March 2006
Palms Restaurant Hollywood CA - The Palms Thai Restaurant without a doubt is one of the top Thai restaurants in the entire state of California. This is a bold statement, but I feel qualified to say this after having eaten at at least a hundred Thai restaurants in Thailand, many Thai restaurants in other countries around the world, and over 50 Thai restaurants in the state of California alone. The food here for both lunch and dinner is very … [Read more...]
The Pyramids of Giza
The Egyptian Pyramids! One of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World! I had read about them in school. I had seen them on countless TV programs, and I had always wondered what it would be like to see them in person. And now, now, I was going to do just that - see the pyramids in person! The Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Cairo was, thankfully, not even half full. There was lots of elbow room for everybody, and since I'd been … [Read more...]
A Thai Wedding Story
Sawasdee kha friends! Part I I find myself writing this email several hours after my brother's village Thai wedding, while sitting in the comfortably air-conditioned "business center" of our hotel. It's not often on my travels that I am left without words to describe my experiences, but for once I feel that this email can never fully articulate the feel of the last 24 hours. When we left Bangkok yesterday I was eager to return to the … [Read more...]
Huaraz, Peru – Restaurants
Dave has eaten at all of the restaurants listed below. More restaurants will be added here during future climbing trips. Cafe Turmanye is owned by Finnish and Spanish missionaries with proceeds from the cafe funding local missionary work. This cafe opened in early summer 2008. Several couches make this a nice place to relax during your breakfast and lunch. Good fruit juices and simple food items. This cafe is just down the hill on the left … [Read more...]
Iquitos, Peru – Eco Vagabond Lodge
UPDATE: UNFORTUNATELY THIS LODGE IS NOW CLOSED If it reopens under new ownership we will post the update here. One jungle lodge you will NEVER find in a travel guidebook is the Eco Vagabond Lodge located about 1 hour from Iquitos by fast boat. This rustic lodge sits mere meters from the great Amazon River. It is owned by an Argentine and a Peruvian - they no longer live at the lodge, but a fabulous bilingual guide Carmina who is in her … [Read more...]
The Suk11, Suk 11 Bangkok Thailand – June 2005
Suk11 (Suk 11) is an awesome place to discuss travel & meet people to hook up with for traveling. The rooms are decent sized - light, airy and very clean. A real spiritual feel to this place - very interesting decor - at times feels like an international hangout due to the many people from around the world. Be sure to add your name & notes to the appropriate walls! Note: this place fills up very quickly and is immensely popular especially … [Read more...]
Sugar Hut Resort, Pattaya – April 2004
The Sugar Hut Resort & Restaurant is located between Pattaya & Jomtien Beach in Thailand. This "escape from reality" resort was founded in 1984. This is not your typical Pattaya stay. It is located in the midst of lush tropical foliage. Each "hut" is separate from the others by walkways through the foliage and as a result each bungalow is very private. All have balconies. Attention to detail shows here. There are 3 pools on the property … [Read more...]
