For the first time, visitors to Australia’s largest state can embark on excursions to swim with migrating humpback whales between July–October, following the annual whale shark swimming season between March–July
(LOS ANGELES, CA)—Travelers coming to Western Australia’s Coral Coast region will now be able to swim with two types of whales – humpback whales, whose migration traditionally occurring between July to October, and whale sharks, whose swimming season typically happens between March and June.
The newest experience to be offered at the UNESCO World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef, the tours offer intimate encounters with humpback whales in conjunction with strict environmental standards to protect the wildlife, allowing a maximum of five people in the water with one humpback whale at a time. Previously an endangered species in Western Australia, recent conservation efforts have boosted the mammal’s population in the area to around 30,000.
Speaking to the new humpback whale swimming excursions, Exmouth Visitor Center General Manager Kristy Brian Smith said “Visitors will now have an opportunity to tick two key wildlife experiences off their bucket list at Ningaloo Reef, providing yet another exciting reason to visit the Coral Coast this year.”
Operators are offering a full-day tour experience, starting at approximately 10 a.m. and concluding at approximately 5 p.m., depending on the whale’s behavior and the weather.
