NEW YORK – July 27, 2012 – Starting in September 2012, Projects Abroad will host its first volunteers in Samoa, the newest destination where the organization offers international volunteer programs to volunteers of all ages, from students and professionals to families and retirees.
Projects Abroad’s volunteer opportunities in Samoa are located in the capital city of Apia. While Samoa may be known as an attractive travel destination thanks to its sun and sand, it is also on the UN’s list of least developed nations, especially in urban centers like Apia. Volunteers will assist with education and childcare in local schools and care centers.
With the addition of Samoa, Projects Abroad now works in 28 developing countries spread throughout the globe, with a network of over 500 staff and 8000 annual volunteers worldwide. In every destination Projects Abroad has directly-employed local staff working to ensure volunteers are safe, supported, and happy with a constructive role to play in the local community.
“It is always exciting to help bring volunteers into new countries,” says Projects Abroad Vice President Thomas Pastorius, Jr. “Our model of having directly-employed staff recruited from the same communities where our volunteers work has proven effective and sustainable. Over the last 20 years we have helped over 50,000 volunteers of all ages perform worthwhile services in developing societies, providing local employment and injecting millions of dollars into emerging economies in the process. We are pleased to expand this impact to Samoa.”
About Projects Abroad
Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 by Dr. Peter Slowe, a geography professor, as a program for students to travel and work while on break from full-time study. The program had its genesis in post-USSR Romania, where students were given the chance to teach conversational English. After a few years just sending volunteers to Eastern Europe for teaching, the company expanded to sending volunteers of all ages around the world on a wide range of projects.
Projects Abroad is a global leader in short-term international volunteer programs with projects in 28 countries and recruitment offices in the UK, Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Holland, Hong Kong, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden and the United States.
