Saturday and Sunday April 17-18, 2010
BODEGA BAY, CA. – The Bodega Bay community will celebrate its 37th annual Fisherman’s Festival on the weekend of April 17-18, at Westside Park. Record crowds are expected to take in live music and entertainment, sample local cuisine, and browse the wares of 80 plus crafter and artisan booths. A special feature will be the dedication of a Fishermen’s Memorial to remember fishermen lost at sea.
The festival weekend is packed with music, food, and entertainment. A favorite attraction is the wine tasting booth, featuring more than 25 Sonoma County wines. Food booths have something for every palate from barbequed oysters to hamburger, local fish and chips, and sandwiches. Live music and entertainers perform on the band stage all day Saturday and Sunday. Artisans and vendors from all over California offer a wide selection of arts and crafts.
Entertainment and musical groups include the Unauthorized Rolling Stones, Dirty Dub Band, Pi Circus Performers, Wonder Bread 5, Jeremy Shafer Juggling & Origami Entertainment, and the Tomales High School Band.
Saturday will feature the Wooden Boat Challenge at the festival site — where participating teams build a vessel from scratch, then compete in a boat race inside Bodega Bay harbor. For golfers, there will be a golf tournament at The Links at Bodega Harbour (707-875-3538).
Sunday morning will observe the dedication of the Fishermen’s Memorial at Spud Point Marina, followed by the blessing of the fishing fleet — when decorated boats parade out of the harbor to receive a blessing from local clergy. A flower wreath is cast upon the waters honoring the fishermen lost at sea.
The festival is a great venue for kids, with a play area for face painting, spin paintings, games, free kit lessons, pony rides and the popular Pets on Parade, including llamas and visitors pets.
Admission is $10 (seniors $8), $15 for a weekend pass, and kids under 12 are free. This is a family friendly environment with free parking and handicap access. Leashed pets are welcome. There will be a raffle for prizes from local merchants.
The festival has its origin as a celebration of the start of the Salmon fishing season and the annual Blessing of the Fleet.
The Bodega Bay Fisherman’s Festival is a nonprofit organization run by local community volunteers under the leadership of chair Ginny Bassi. All proceeds of the festival benefit local service and volunteer organizations. For more information call the Bodega Bay Visitors’ Center at 707-875-3866 or access the website at www.bbfishfest.org
