WA state history & social studies teacher co-builds 16-ft historic 1850 replica boat, journeying 80 miles along the coast
Michael Buse, a dedicated high school Social Studies teacher at Insight School of Washington, co-built of a remarkable maritime project – an 1850 replica 16-foot Cutter, as part of his work to document the involvement of the US in Pacific Northwest maritime.
The construction of the replica Cutter commenced in 2021, with Buse working diligently during off-seasons and breaks, supported by the expertise of the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op and foreman Tim Lee. Employing the lapstrake overlapping technique, Buse ensured the vessel’s authenticity and watertight integrity, showcasing his mastery of traditional boat-building methods. This work led to him voyaging with the boat along the Washington coast on an 80-mile journey.
Now residing in Olympia, Buse was inspired by a childhood field trip to see the Golden Hind replica in Everett, Washington. His vision was further fueled by encounters with other a historic vessels like the Lady Washington and his participation in Living History reenactments. Buse also has a published article related to the USS Massachusetts which was one of the first American ships to sail on the Columbia and the Salish Sea (Puget Sound).
Buse’s commitment to education extends beyond the classroom as he plans to incorporate the replica Cutter into his teaching curriculum with his online learning students. Students at Insight School of Washington will have the opportunity to explore maritime history firsthand through virtual tours and engaging lessons facilitated by Buse’s innovative approach to online education.
Reflecting on his journey, Buse shared, “My life had come full circle when I rowed out behind the Lady Washington at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival in 2022. Building this replica has been a labor of love, and I’m excited to share its story with my students and the wider community.”
