Oxnard, CA – Springtime is a great opportunity to refresh, reflect and escape to a destination without the crowds! Oxnard makes for that great spring getaway with its seven miles of uncrowded golden-duned beaches with perfect conditions to bask in the sun while the little ones frolic in the waves.
Just an hour north of Los Angeles, Oxnard is a welcome break from big city life, opening up to new adventures and plenty of activity for all age groups. One of Oxnard’s main highlights is its beaches. A popular one is Oxnard Beach Park, a paved boardwalk lined with towering palms leading the way past rolling lawns to Mandalay Beach. Visitors will find covered picnic areas, volleyball courts, a children’s playground and an abundance of opportunity for jogging, bicycling, skating and more.
The oceanfront Embassy Suites by Hilton Mandalay Beach Resort situated adjacent to the beach park, provides a great spot to spend the night with its many onsite amenities including a large freeform swimming pool, tennis courts, Coastal Grill Restaurant and, of course, the beach!
Other family friendly beaches include Silver Strand, a popular local spot for surfers complete with colorful murals located along the eastern end of the strip and where a nearly 50-year old sunken ship, La Janelle is now the namesake for La Janelle Park.
Another notable beach, Hollywood Beach, is named for its popularity among movie stars at the turn of the twentieth century. Here, visitors can explore Channel Islands Harbor, filled with all types of outdoor activities such as stand-up paddle boarding, jet skis, electric boats, bike rentals, kayaking and even parasailing, providing an amazing opportunity to soar over blue skies while taking in the views of the southern California coastline.
The Channel Islands are just 11 miles offshore from Oxnard and make for a fun family outing. Whale Watching continues through mid-April for visitors to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Pacific Gray Whales.
Besides outdoor adventure, Oxnard has many diverse restaurants along the water’s edge including the Hollywood Beach Café, Moqueca Brazilian Cuisine, Waterside Restaurant & Wine Bar and Seafresh Restaurant.
A treasure trove of maritime paintings, ship models and artifacts are housed at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum located within the harbor. It’s a fun place to browse through the collections, and a place to return again with its range of rotating exhibits.
For golf enthusiasts, the River Ridge Golf Club is a great spot to enjoy a round of golf on the scenic courses or try out FootGolf, combining the best of soccer with golf. A specially-designed course allows for families to engage in this new sport for hours of endless fun.
Downtown Oxnard provides a myriad of family fun from strolls through Heritage Square, to a stop at the Carnegie Art Museum featuring a vast collection of California art and history. When hunger strikes, visitors can take a lunch break at one of the family owned restaurants.
