Brazil is seeing a growing number of international visitors. From January to September 2024, the country experienced a 12% increase in foreign tourists compared to the same period in 2023. September set a new record for the month since the historical series began in 1989, with 445,389 travelers arriving—a 26.4% jump from September 2023.
In total, 4,897,671 international tourists visited Brazil during the first nine months of 2024. This encouraging data was released on Monday (14), by the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with Embratur and the Federal Police.
Marcelo Freixo, president of Embratur, celebrated these results. “September saw a record-breaking increase of 26.4% compared to last year, the highest ever for that month. This reflects our efforts to promote a broader range of destinations and experiences beyond the typical sun-and-beach tourism,” he explained.
“We are showcasing Brazil’s diverse offerings—its nature, culture, gastronomy, and festivals—providing unique experiences year-round. This strategy helps reduce the impact of seasonality, boosting tourism even during the off-peak months and ensuring steady business and employment in the sector,” Freixo added.
Minister of Tourism Celso Sabino shared his optimism about the upward trend. “Brazil is enhancing its international brand. We’ve been working to highlight our cultural, culinary, and natural diversity, which can only be found here. Our goal is to achieve double-digit growth in foreign tourist numbers by 2027,” Sabino said.
September emerged as the fourth-best month for international tourist arrivals in 2024, following the high season months of January, February, and March.
Argentina remains Brazil’s top source of tourists, with over 1.4 million visitors since the start of the year. The United States follows with over 518,000 tourists, and Chile comes in third with 454,225. European countries, including France, Portugal, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain, contributed 741,614 visitors crossing the Atlantic to explore Brazil.
Goals
The recently launched National Tourism Plan (PNT) 2024-2027 by the Ministry of Tourism aims to position Brazil as South America’s top tourist destination. The plan sets a target of 8.1 million foreign tourists annually and aims to generate US$8.1 billion in tourism revenue. Based on current trends, Brazil expects to surpass 10 million international visitors within this period.
