All you need to do is select one of the locations you are interested in, complete the camping for beginners checklist, and plan your trip!
As a newbie, you may not know which destination may be best for you. After all, it is essential that the location you choose not only offers pleasant visual impressions and natural diversity but is also convenient for living in the camp.
There are many campsites in popular state parks and forests throughout the United States where you can solitude with nature. You can choose from primitive campsites along mountain streams to glamping sites with all the necessary amenities.
Let’s take a look at some of the best places in the US that are amazing for camping if you’re a first-time traveler!
Howard Creek, California
Howard Creek Campground at Westport–Union Landing State Beach is located on the Mendocino coast in California. This campground is best suited for travelers who prefer RVs. Among the main reasons is that it is quite windy here. Therefore, if you are just starting your journey in the world of camping, then such weather conditions may be unusual, especially if this is your first overnight stay in a tent outdoors.
At the same time, it offers stunning views of the King Range and the Pacific Ocean. This scenic landscape will surprise those who come here for the first time and make camping in this place truly memorable due to its natural beauty and breathtaking landscapes typical of California!
Main Campground, California
Another nice spot in California that is worth adding to your travel list is Main Campground. This place is located in Samuel P. Taylor State Park.
Here, visitors can enjoy sun-drenched meadows, redwood forests, and Lagunitas Creek. Natural scenery like this makes Main Campground a great choice for first-time campers who want to get away from the city and experience nature.
In addition to the visual experience, you can explore the Cross Marin Trail while visiting this campground, which is suitable for hiking and cycling. Also, the campsite has a convenient location, so if you need to buy something, there are grocery shops just 15 minutes away.
The main thing to remember when planning to camp at Samuel P. Taylor State Park is that it can be difficult to make reservations for the weekend due to the influx of visitors. Therefore, plan your trip in advance!
South End, Washington
South End Campground is located in Moran State Park, Washington. At this park, you can choose from five campsites located on Orcas Island in San Juan.
Camping here is a great way to live in nature for a couple of days, surrounded by evergreen trees. The South End offers visitors a wide range of activities, from swimming and paddle boating to fishing and hiking along nearly 40 miles of trails.
Among the advantages of South End Park Campground is that this place is not crowded, so if you want to be close to nature while camping, then this location is perfect. In addition, the sites have all the necessary amenities such as showers and toilets.
When planning a trip to the South End, you can camp along the private beach along the sapphire-colored Cascade Lake.
Fallen Leaf, California
Fallen Leaf Campground is located on the north shore of Fallen Leaf Lake in California.
More than 200 sites are available for visitors here. You can choose between yurts, campgrounds, and RVs. The area is usually open to the public from mid-May to mid-October.
Each yurt is a house designed for a family of five or six people. The yurts have electric lighting and heaters, but no additional electrical outlets. The interior features futons and beds with mattresses. However, kitchen utensils and bed linen are not provided.
Tent and RV sites include paved parking, a food locker, a fire pit, a grill, and a picnic table.
Showers and toilets are located throughout the campsite. The campground is staffed and firewood and supplies can be purchased from the store.
Although Fallen Leaf Lake is not as popular or famous as Lake Tahoe, it is an ideal spot to relax and explore the many attractions and recreational activities in the area.
Apgar Campground, Montana
Apgar is the largest campground in Glacier National Park, Montana. This location is surrounded by trees, providing shade and privacy for visitors.
This campground is quite large with almost 200 sites. In addition, these spots are located relatively far from each other. Therefore, if you want to spend time with friends or family in nature without the noise of others, then Apgar is just such a place! The campsites have potable water, toilets, and sinks.
The park gets its name from its unusually glacial topography and the remains of a glacier that formed about 10,000 years ago. Its diverse habitat is home to many species of mammals, including grizzly bears, badgers, gray wolves, and lynx. Also, different species of birds visit and live in the park, including harlequin ducks, loons, and golden eagles.
Among the attractions, it is worth mentioning Waterton Lakes National Park – a sister park to Glacier, located on the border of Canada and the United States. Waterton Lakes offers great nature walks and scenic drives.
In addition to hiking and camping, it’s worth attending an evening ranger program at the Apgar Amphitheater, which will make your camping experience even more educational!
