Although visitors to this blog will know that we take great pride in bringing you travel highlights from the most distant corners of the globe, it’s often easy to accidentally overlook some magnificent attractions on our own doorstep.
So seeing as we brought you some recent snapshots of Ireland, we thought it would be apt to show you one reason why thousands of Irish people come to the UK each springtime – the Cheltenham Festival.
Taking place on and around St Patrick’s Day, the annual Cheltenham Festival brings the very best in British and Irish thoroughbreds together to provide racing fans, Cheltenham tips sites, and even the world’s fashionistas together in a massive celebration of horse racing.
The event takes place from 15 to 18 March at the historic racecourse which is located just north of the pretty spa town on the edge of the Cotswolds. The St Patrick’s Thursday event provides everyone with the perfect opportunity to indulge in a pint of Guinness, whereas Ladies’ Day on Friday has drawn national attention for its ability to attract a huge range of celebrities and fashion aficionados, all wearing the latest styles.
But the main attraction is undoubtedly the Gold Cup race that takes place on the Saturday. Even racing newbies can quickly get to grips with the racehorses and jockeys, as sites such as Coral provide a comprehensive guide to their form along with all of the betting odds so that you have a flutter without feeling too out of your depth.
In terms of accommodation, Cheltenham offers plenty of boutique hotels in the city centre, but if you’re looking for something a little more glamorous, then Beaumont House provides a five-star way for you to decide how you’d want to spend your race-day winnings.
Should you manage to tear yourself away from the many Cheltenham tips sites, then the spa town is perfectly situated for exploring the beautiful surrounding Cotswolds.
Key attractions include the serene Lodge Park and Sherborne Estate, whereas Cleeve Hill should provide a welcome breath of fresh air and opportunity for exercise just in case you weren’t exhilarated enough by the events at the racetrack.
Above all, the Cheltenham Festival is perfectly placed in the year to provide the excuse for getting out and about in the crisp air of early springtime. And with a wide range of Cheltenham tips sites offering expert guidance into the events on the track, going to the races just got a lot easier.
