The past couple of years have been difficult and frustrating ones for travel lovers, and it has been wonderful to be able to take to the streets, the seas and the skies again this year. If you’ve found yourself arriving at the airport three hours early and at a loss for what to do, don’t worry. You’re not alone and all of us got out of that routine that had become second nature.
The truth, as it seems we need reminding, is this. While jetting around the world is undoubtedly wonderful, it can involve a lot of waiting around at airport terminals, which is undoubtedly not. The good news is there are plenty of ways to keep yourself busy if you’ve got a little imagination, a fully charged cellphone and a good set of headphones or ear pods.
Listen to a story
Reading a book is great but it’s just something else to carry. An e-reader app is an alternative, but eyestrain can become an issue after an hour or so. The answer is to have someone read to you. There are numerous great sources for audiobooks. Subscription apps like Audible are a good deal if you want the latest best sellers, but there are numerous free sources too, from YouTube to LibriVox. The latter is fabulous if you like listening to classics from the likes of Dickens, Hemingway and so on.
Have a flutter
You don’t have to fly to Las Vegas or Monte Carlo to indulge in a little gambling. In fact, there are literally scores of online casinos right at your fingertips. All you need to do is install a good casino app. Click to find more information about what is available and to ensure you select a reputable platform with a good selection of games. From slots to card games, some casino apps even have TV-style games shows where you can participate for the chance to win instant cash.
Talk to someone
Here’s an idea that won’t drain your cellphone battery. We all became a little introspective during the dark times of 2020. Now the world is back to normal, so strike up a conversation with some fellow passengers. This is particularly recommended for solo travelers. Yes, some people might think you are eccentric, but if they don’t want to chat, just respect that and move on. The majority will be as bored as you and will relish the opportunity for some company. You might even be able to exchange a few handy travel tips!
Make final preparations
If you left for the airport in a hurry only to be there well ahead of you boarding time, now is your chance to slowly and calmly go through everything. Check you have the necessary information you’ll need when you arrive, such as reservation details for onward travel, hotel and so on. If you’re missing any of it, use this spare time to search through your email or make the necessary phone calls. Far better than doing so in a panic when you get to your destination and are desperately struggling to get an internet connection!
