Whether you’re a first time cruiser, or a seasoned veteran, looking fresh and crisp while sailing the seas is always on the top of every travellers packing list. Knowing how to pack right is essential when you’re literally stuck in the middle of the ocean, so JustFly reviews our top packing hacks to make sure you’re looking good, wherever you go!
Leave your booty shorts for the pool or the gym
Less is more when it comes to deciding what to bring with you on a cruise, but we’re not talking about the thong bikini. Much like any mainland resort or hotel, walking around in swim wear is typically deemed as inappropriate if you’re not actually pool side. For this reason, bringing a beach cover, t-shirt, or flowy pants with you when you hit the pool deck is essential, for both men and women.
In addition to covering up, be sure to back some water resistant shoes that are non-slip, and are not running shoes. Flips flops are a great alternative to clunkier shoes that may bring in dirt and other debris onto the pool deck.
Evening wear
On every cruise itinerary is a night where passengers are requested to dress up in their best formal wear and attend a “Captain’s Dinner” aboard the ship. The evening is a full-fledged affair; formal portraits are taken, members of your table are also dressed up, there’s some kind of performance throughout the meal for your enjoyment, and overall, it’s an opportunity to have a world-class dining experience while looking and feeling your best.
But these kinds of evenings often provide some sort of panic among guests. Questions like; what should I wear, what will everyone else be wearing, how should you do your hair or groom your face, how will I get the kids to sit still are all valid.
Typically speaking, guests must wear some kind of formal wear to the evening dinner according to JustFly. Dress codes are specific for each ship, so check with the cruise line prior to packing for more information. Typically, women and girls wear dresses that are a minimum knee-length or otherwise considered cocktail dresses. For men and boys, suits with jacket and tie, or a tuxedo, are all appropriate for a formal evening.
Please note that some cruises may turn away passengers from the dining room should they not adhere to these specific dress codes on this particular night.
Excursion hacks
If you decided to take on an excursion at one of the ports the cruise docks at, then be sure to pack a bag filled with the essentials you may need for the day.
The pack should be lightweight enough for you to carry throughout the day, but filled with must-have items like sunscreen, water bottles, rain poncho, and a mini first aid kit. Ensure that your water bottle is a reusable one and avoid purchasing overpriced bottles at tourist traps.
Make sure to keep valuables in a secure place either on your person of in your bag. JustFly suggests using mini locks to secure zippers and avoid theft while out in busy, tourist areas.
