“Everything … and plenty of it!” – This could be the motto of the city. In Dubai, all the threads in the Emirates come together and merge into a metropolitan point where almost the entire social, economic, political and cultural life of the country takes place. Dubai is a city of records, the exaggeration of superlatives. The highest skyscraper in the world (the “Burj Khalifa” with majestic 823 m) or the famous artificial luxury-housing complex (“The Palm – Jumeirah”) are just two of many examples. It seems that in Dubai all limitations are expandable. Both, from the perspective of the usually feasible as well as from the perspective of the normally affordable!
Is money still an issue in Dubai?
Certainly – but just in a different dimension. The wealth accumulated by the earlier giant oil fields of the country seems to be immeasurable when looking at this super city. Alone the construction of the world’s biggest airport is a mammoth project that every day devours tens of millions of dollars. The planning of the largest shopping centre in the history of humankind (appraisal of the planning committee!) is the next monument, which will make it into local history. With 4.5 million square meters, the “Mall of the World” will outshine all other similar constructions.
Anyhow, even financially strong countries like the United Arab Emirates may swerve, as the global economic crisis has shown. In its urge to achieve ever-greater results, Dubai has overestimated itself. Only a gigantic bailout by Abu Dhabi prevented the end for the dazzling desert city. A very interesting report in the German magazine Spiegel takes a closer look at the situation. Furthermore, a change in thinking took place. Dubai shifted its efforts away from oil as the only monetary foundation to tourism. Today Dubai is on top again – and is building up like never before. The fact that the local police drives patrol in specially modified Lamborghinis, Ferraris and recently even a Bugatti Veyron, perfectly explains the current situation.
Luxury trips to Dubai – Six stars for the international jet set
While in other destinations worldwide, the rich and famous reside in five-star hotels, luxury resorts in Dubai – such as the “Atlantis – The Palm” – add one more star. In this regard, the Royal Bridge Suite with an area of almost 1,000 square meters speaks a clear language.
