Sure, you already know about beaches and theme parks in Florida. However, you probably have not explored all the stunning delights of Marion County, which is often referred to as the “Horse Capital of the World.”
Marion County is in North Central Florida, forty miles from Gainesville and sixty-five miles from Orlando. It is a land of rivers and springs, oak trees and Spanish moss, and your idyllic getaway could include both casual camping and lavish luxury.
HORSES
Over 1,200 horse farms dot the gently rolling hills of Marion County. If you are not familiar with horse lingo, here are seven terms to research before chatting with horse breeders: blue hen, by, out of, sire, dam, nick, and pedigree. You may be shocked to learn that this area is home to over seventy horse breeds and hundreds of miles of riding trails.
An impressive place to visit is Grandview Clydesdales Farm. Owners Shannon and Karen Cobbs breed, train, and show. Their tours are reasonably priced as well as accessible for disabled and older people. You can learn about, touch, and photograph several of the amazing and attractive Clydesdales.
For a jaw-dropping experience, consider the 378-acre World Equestrian Center. This incredible facility has a luxury hotel complete with shopping and restaurants. In addition to horse shows, they also host dog shows and boat shows. The lovely chapel on the grounds offers worship services on Sundays and Wednesdays. It is also a picturesque place for weddings.
Try to find all the vibrant life-size horse statues along the Painted Horse Trail. World Champ and Travels are two of my favorites and truly captivating sights.
NATURE
The variety of outdoor things to do in Marion County is almost unbelievable. The Ocala National Forest is a perfect place to escape from your normal routine. Silver Springs State Park offers a museum, camping, and their famous glass-bottomed boats. Perhaps you would prefer a peaceful kayaking experience on the crystal-clear Rainbow River.
A CLASSIC DRIVE-IN
Drive-in movie theatres had their heyday from the 1930’s through the 1960’s. Unfortunately, most of them closed down after that. Luckily for you, Marion County has an outstanding example that is run by an audacious man. John Watzke refurbished and reopened Ocala Drive-In in 2011. He and Ocala Drive-In made national news when he refused to shut down in 2020. For a few weeks it was the only one up and running. His passion for this place is heart-warming. Having grown up in New Orleans, he recently added Taste of New Orleans items to his regular concession menu. Ocala Drive-In is fun and nostalgic.
FOOD
The delectable variety of food found in Marion County, Florida is unexpected. Here are my alphabetized recommendations for seven superb places to find fantastic food.
Big Hammock Brewery & Bites has craft beer and excellent value on options such as unusual sandwiches and ramen bowls. The fun bonus is that you get to use chopsticks.
District Bar & Kitchen has an eclectic menu including everything from bison sloppy joe to reuben egg roll. The fun bonus is enjoying the view from the second-floor terrace.
Katya Vineyards pairs gourmet food and fine wine in high style. Try their shrimp or octopus. The bonus is you may cry happy tears just looking at that gorgeous tin ceiling.
Ocala Drive-In is where to get an authentic muffuletta. Bonuses are regular concession food, the flea market, movies, and the owner’s wonderful Cajun accent.
Stirrups is the epitome of elegant and refined dining. The crab cake and creamed onion soup are sumptuous. Bonus is the royal treatment from skilled wait staff who exceed expectations.
Swampy’s is a casual bar and grill for getting your fill of fish or Philly cheese or gator bites. Bonus is picnic tables by the Rainbow River and the best bread pudding anywhere.
The Yellow Pony is perfect for adult drinks, burgers, ribs, and sliders followed by a slice of pie. Bonus is cute horse décor, fireplace, and outdoor patio.
