Seattle is a great hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies alike. From the endless mountains, shimmering lakes, to unforgettable sunsets by the beach, Seattle is every nature lover’s paradise. So if you’re looking for the best outdoor activities in Seattle, then you are sure to enjoy this list for unforgettable outdoor experience!
The best part? Seattle promises unforgettable outdoor experiences tailored for everyone.
Whether you’re traveling with a group of friends or family looking to enjoy nature or you’re on a solo adventure, you are sure to enjoy these outdoor activities.
Having traveled to Seattle numerous times, I can personally vouch for its allure, especially if you are traveling alone. Seattle’s friendly atmosphere and well-organized transportation system make it an ideal spot for those looking to travel solo. Its diverse activities, such as all the activities mentioned below, ensure that solo travelers never feel alone, making traveling alone not just just doable, but incredibly enjoyable!
So, let’s dive into your first must do outdoor experience!
Take a Hike:
If there’s one thing that is undoubtedly at the top of this list for the best outdoor activities in Seattle, it is to take a hike at one of their many mountains. This city is known for its vibrant nature and endless mountains. So taking a hike is a must do activity!
One of my favorite trails is the Discovery Park Loop. This hike is perfect for beginners as it is 2.8 miles long on relatively flat terrain, with an elevation change of just 140 feet. Discovery park loop offers amazing views of the forest and coastline.
If you’re a seasoned hiker looking for a challenge, I’d highly recommend Mount Si. Which is located about a 45 minute drive from Seattle. In total, it’s an 8 mile round trip hike with 3,100 feet ascending to the top of the mountain. But I assure you that the views at the very top are worth every drop of sweat.
Just keep in mind that if this is your first time traveling to Seattle, then be aware that the weather will constantly change. Always check the weather conditions before you head out. Also make sure to pack appropriate clothing, with layers and a rain jacket. Trust me; you’ll thank me later.
Skiing
If you love winter sports, then you are in for a treat! Just under two hours away from the heart of Seattle is Crystal Mountain, the crown jewel of skiing in Washington.
It’s not just the largest ski area in the state, but it also has 2,600 acres of skiable terrain, 3,100 feet of vertical climb, and over 50 thrilling runs. With the majority of the slopes at Crystal Mountain rated blue and black. So Crystal Mountain promises some of the most exhilarating slopes you can find in the region.
Now, I’ll be honest. I’m no expert skier. But the beauty of Crystal Mountain: it’s for everyone. So even if you’re like me, or a black diamond expert, there’s plenty to do for everyone.
My favorite activity is to take the Mt. Rainier Gondola ride. This scenic trip takes you up 2,400 feet, right to the mountain’s summit. And the views from the top are absolutely stunning!
Even in the summer mountain, there is still so much to do! You can explore its many hiking trails, including dog friendly trails, try your hand at disc golf, set up camp under the stars, or challenge yourself on their adventure course.
When you are skiing, hiking, or dining at their high end restaurants, you are sure to have a great time at Crystal Mountain.
Alki Beach
If you are traveling with your family or simply looking for a relaxing activity outdoors, then you must visit Alki beach.
Alki Beach is an extremely popular beach where even the locals go to escape into the beautiful beach and relax by the water.
Stretching over 2.5 miles, Alki Beach is perfect for joggers, rollerbladers, and bicyclists. On summer evenings, you can also enjoy the volleyball courts or take a tour of the Alki lighthouse. Plus, Alki Beach Park is one of only two parks in the city of Seattle that allows bonfires. So you can roast some smores while stargazing at one of their designated fire pits.
This beach offers an amazing panoramic view of the Olympic Mountains, the Seattle skyline and ferries gracefully gliding across Elliott Bay.
This beach also offers the perfect opportunity to people or bird watch. And if you’re lucky enough, you may also see playful seals that frequently visit the bay!
Paragliding
If you’re seeking some adrenaline while having scenic views, then paragliding is a great and exhilarating option. As there are plenty of opportunities for paragliding on Tiger Mountain.
I have personally tried paragliding for the first time in Seattle and I absolutely loved it! The adrenaline pumping through your body as you’re standing at the top of the mountain is thrilling!
Then after you jump, you can soar above the eagles and fly through mountain tops! Not many people can say that they have done this, so trust me, you’ll want to try it too!
What’s awesome about paragliding is that it’s a fun activity for all types of travelers to enjoy. Whether you’re traveling alone or with a group, there’s space for everyone!
The best part, you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy this unique experience. You will be able to partner up with a certified instructor and take a tandem flight. They guide the entire way to ensure your safety while you just sit back and enjoy the views.
Pro Tip: book in advance. Paragliding is becoming one of the best outdoor activities in Seattle, and slots fill up fast, especially during peak seasons. So make sure to book in advance to secure your spot.
And trust me, paragliding is an experience that’ll have you coming back for more.
Pikes Market Place:
Pikes Market Place is one of the most iconic places in Seattle aside from the Space Needle. Plus, it’s one of my favorite indoor/outdoor experiences to enjoy while in Seattle!
Pikes Market Place is easy to find, as it’s in the heart of downtown Seattle. It stretches over several blocks and is both an indoor and outdoor market place. There are also a bunch of twists, turns, and hidden spots everywhere, so there’s always something new to explore.
Plus, it’s an adventure everyone in the family can enjoy. Seriously! I went there with my grandma, and she enjoyed it so much I had a hard time keeping up with her! Plus, with so many fun tables and friendly people there is truly something for everyone to enjoy.
You can watch fish sellers tossing fresh catches, listen to street musicians play, and discover handmade crafts. You also must try all the yummy treats from local bakeries or check out some of the unique toy stores.
And oh, taking a photo with the famous Pike Place Market sign is a must!
And if you’re lucky, you may even see a policeman give a clown a ticket, just like Dave saw while he was at Pikes Market Place while traveling in Seattle!
Conclusion:
From hiking through Mount Si, to paragliding on Tiger mountain, to walking through Pikes Market Place, Seattle provides an array of outdoor activities. Every corner of this city has a unique adventure waiting to happen with breath taking sights to see. So, whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, seeking adrenaline or relaxation, Seattle ensures an unforgettable outdoor experience.
