Cedar Rapids is often associated with corn, the great flood of 2008, The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library and perhaps the film, Cedar Rapids staring Ed Helms and a few other funny actors. But it is also is home to the much lesser-known Flying Wienie.
Originally a Shell Oil Station, this restaurant was founded in 1999 by chef John Martin. When one drives by, its hard not to miss spotting this homey restaurant. First of all its name is catchy – but how many restaurants have a real plane mounted on top of their roof? A bright yellow highly visible 1962 Piper Colt is perched on top of the restaurant, an homage to John’s passion for flying. And a number of items and articles relating to flying are located inside. But one doesn’t come here for the memorabilia, although that ads a nice ambiance to the visit, one comes here for the delicious yet inexpensive food.
Their focus is on authentic Chicago-style cuisine using fresh ingredients; known for their Italian sausage and ribs. Also features freshly prepared and very tasty soups – if one asks nicely you may be given a sample.
Indoor dining is available as well as several outdoor tables. Simply put, this is an under the radar cool place to hang out. Next time you are in Cedar Rapids, be sure to pay them a visit. Address: 103 8th Ave – a short distance from the Cedar River and downtown. For more information, visit: www.theflyingwienie.com
