Matanuska Glacier Alaska – The Matanuska Glacier is approximately 25 miles long and about 2 miles wide. By overland transportation it is arguably Alaska’s most easily accessible glacier. It is located mere minutes from the Glenn Highway about 2 hours north of Anchorage. You drive down a dirt road to the store where you pay the entrance fee & sign a waiver of release form – and then drive another mile or so to the parking lot. From the lot follow the cones to the actual glacier which is usually a 5-10 minute walk. From here the glacier is “yours”. If you have the proper equipment and previous glacier experience there are many glacier walls, crevasses and other formations for you to “cut your teeth on”. If you do not have prior glacier experience, there is still a large area of the glacier that you can walk on without needing special equipment. Sometimes small lakes form near large ice seracs (chunks of towering ice) and these can be interesting to walk to.
