Mountain Zone – was one of the earlier mountaineering sites on the internet – having been founded back in 1996 (the same year this site was started). For a number of years they covered and sponsored a number of major expeditions and covered major mountaineering news including the discovery of George Mallory’s body on Mt. Everest and the Everest climbing disaster of 1996. Mt. Everest was on the front page of this site a lot back in their early days. The on site feel and closeness of the climbers to the mountains they were climbing was evident through the site’s original stories and photography. The site certainly was a big part of bringing this world to the ‘outside’ world.
After several iterations of the site, it still focuses on mountains and the outdoors but now the content is of a nature that is less extreme and more obtainable for the general population. Visit Mountain Zone; the site is an excellent source for desktop photos, travel related climbing stories, skiing, summit stories, “mountain towns” (of which a number are not truly in the mountains) and more. There is also a good selection of travel and adventure videos as well as latest product reviews.
