Kakum Rainforest, Ghana – Kakum National Park is located about 30 kilometers from the town of Cape Coast. Cape Coast has an abundant number of guesthouses. Depending on traffic and the number of potholes allow about 45 minutes to the park entrance. You must have a guide to enter the hiking trails, you are not allowed to walk the trails by yourself, which is a shame. The main attraction is the virgin rainforest and the world’s longest canopy walk.
This is truly one of the great natural attractions in Ghana. The rainforest is spectacular and you are afforded a unique perspective on the walkway which is 20-30 meters above the forest floor. You are given about an hour to visit the canopy walkway with the option of paying for another hour for a guided jungle walk. The park is home to about 550 different species of butterflies and you will surely see a number of these floating around as you walk. Also some of the animals that live here are nocturnal – the park offers overnight camping right among the jungle.
