- Aberdeen Resort is located about 15 miles north of Independence (about one mile north of the 395 Highway rest area). As you get close to the resort, you might spot donkeys roaming about. During one visit they came right up to us ‘begging’ for food by putting their cute face through our rolled down car windows. This relaxing ‘oasis’ is surrounded by greenery in the heart of the often dry Owens Valley. Located along Goodale creek there is plenty of fishing for the young ones and those young at heart. Like up and down the 395 in this part of the Owens Valley, there are great views of the Sierra Nevada.
Features an RV Park, Mobile Home park and a very affordable restaurant serving lunch and dinner. Open seasonally from April through the end of September. Also a store on site for additional provisions.
- Courthouse Motel is located at 157 North Edwards Street (appropriately named as they are right across from the historic courthouse).
A single story motel – offers two wings of rooms with a parking lot in the center. Very quiet and comfortable rooms. Also very clean rooms. A space heater quickly warms up the room during cold weather. Friendly owner who can provide information about the local area and various attractions worth visiting. They are open year round, 24 hours a day. Reasonably priced rooms. Phone: 878-2732. - Fort Independence is a RV/Trailer park. They are located 2 miles north of Independence on the west side of Highway 395. They have 50 quiet camping spaces, and 8 pull throughs. Phone: 878-2126.
- Independence Inn is located as you enter Independence from the south on the right hand side – address: 440 S Edwards St. The owner lives on property and has a background in hospitality while working with his parents on their resort located on Lake Shasta.
This Inn opened in 2010 after being closed for many years – after undergoing significant renovation work. Look for the unique cupola (haven’t seen this on many motels). Visit: www.independenceinn.net - Mt. Williamson Hotel is located on 515 S. Edwards Street. Owned by Chris (aka Strider) a long time hiker of the John Muir Trail. This is a nice peaceful spot to call home for a few days during your trip to the Eastern Sierras.
Offers several pet friendly cabins. Each cabin includes a refrigerator and microwave. Very backpacker and hiker friendly and can offer resupply services and support for hikers on the John Muir Travel and the Pacific Crest Trails. Appropriately named after Mt. Williamson (the second tallest mountain in California) which you can see from the property. Visit: www.mtwilliamsonmotel.com Phone: 878-2121 - Ray’s Den Motel is located at 405 North Edwards Street. They offer queen beds, phones, and color cable TV. They are located just two blocks north of the courthouse and are open year round 24 hours a day. Friendly owner.
Offers clean comfortable and fairly reasonably priced rooms. Phone: 878-2122. Visit: www.raysden.com - The Winnedumah is a B&B located at 211 N. Edwards St. Phone: 878-2040 This was built in the 1920’s and has some historic charm.
Also a nice outdoor patio for relaxing – guests can use the BBQ to grill up some meats and veggies or perhaps some freshly caught trout in one of the nearby cold streams. Chairs and hammocks here for relaxing.
