I was thinking this might be a helpful post for people starting a travel blog. Established sites have built their brands up over time and often let advertisers contact them. Less established sites will need to take a proactive approach (at least in the initial stages) and reach out to potential advertisers.
Here are a few:
Guest Posting – this has become much more popular in the last 6 months. 90-95% of all parties who email me about this go nowhere – they want to submit content for free. Or their prices are so low it is just not worth trying to come to an agreement. And then of those, nearly all interested parties are from London. These are all one time payments.
Direct advertising – personally this is my preferred form of advertising. The reason being renewals – we’ve been able to count on a number of these who keep renewing month after month. Often these are in content text.
eBooks – focus on a topic you enjoy and are knowlegeable in and write a book and sell it online. Typical prices range from $3 to $4 per sale. I’ve always been of the belief that as much information on the net should be free – yes this is old school. I’ve spent thousands of hours collecting travel and wine information and presenting it online to help people. Money is not the focus.
Email Newsletter – embed advertising to opt in subscribers via email.
Affiliate programs – I’ve had very little success with these. Google adsense was the initial leader in this. Your paid per click, or per views of a certain ad. Based on very niche site with lots of interest in whatever ads are displayed or need significant traffic.
Speak – some travel bloggers earn good money by being industry experts and speaking at conferences.
Tours – while this isn’t passive income – there are a number of tour sites allowing people to become “guides” in their home region. We list a few here
Write for Others – leverage the experience of writing your own travel blog into writing for others – both paid and non paid opportunities. Non paid for initial exposure – and then paid for additional income.
Comments? Advice? Or any other income streams from online travel blogs that I’ve missed mentioning here?
