forehoweIf you are looking for a romantic places in San Diego to watch the sunset, this list has just the location you are looking for. Sunsets in San Diego can be spectacular. Watching the sun slowly sink into the Pacific is a magic moment to be shared with the one you love.
You might even catch a glimpse of the “green flash” that is sometimes visible for just a second or two as the sun disappears down behind the ocean. This flash is real and happens when part of the sun changes color rapidly. The flash can be a vivid emerald color. Sometimes it is yellow or even blue.
Any of San Diego’s beaches would be a great place to watch the sunset. My personal favorites are La Jolla Cove, Sunset Cliffs, and Windansea. I love watching the cliffs along the shore begin to glow as the sky changes colors. The colorful seascapes at sunset create a romantic setting that is truly special.
The Outdoor Terrace Bistro at George’s at the Cove in La Jolla is the best restaurant to dine and watch the sunset. Call ahead for reservations and request a table next to the water. The food is great and the location is perfect. You can enjoy great food, good service and a sunset overlooking La Jolla Cove all at the same time. The sun can put on such a spectacular show that diners even applaud as it disappears behind the sea.
Mount Soledad in La Jolla is 822 feet high above San Diego and offers 360 degree views of the coastline and the surrounding area. To the south you can see past San Diego and Coronado all the way to Mexico. Look east and view the mountains; south you see the Pacific Ocean; and north you gaze past the University of California at San Diego, and Torrey Pines. You will find grass areas, benches, walkways, and a Veterans Memorial Wall that honors veterans from all wars and conflicts.
Sunset Gondola Cruises (on Coronado Island) let you experience the romance and magic of Venice right here in San Diego. Cruise through the canals and waterways of the Coronado Cays in a gondola driven by a gondolier dressed in traditional Italian clothing. Enjoy the sunset while listening to Italian music, sipping on champagne served with chocolate covered strawberries.
Mount Helix Park in La Mesa has breathtaking views of the city and the coast from its elevation of 1370 feet high. Mount Helix is known for the large white cross erected at the peak of the mountain and its outdoor amphitheater where musicals are performed during the summer. Enjoy the sunset view from the top of this usually uncrowded vista, one of the most romantic places in San Diego to watch sunsets.
The El Prado area of Balboa Park is one of the most romantic places in San Diego during sunsets. This is the heart of Balboa Park built in 1915 for a world’s fair. As the sun is setting, it can cast a glow over the Spanish Colonial buildings, creating an unforgettable romantic ambiance.
