Hello and GREETINGS from West Africa!
I realize this is an old post but I would like to add West Africa as a viable destination, especially Dakar, Senegal. The violent crime rates (and HIV/AIDS) in Senegal are FAR LOWER than Southern and East Africa, America, Europe and most everywhere else for that matter. The schools are good and the population is friendly and well educated so even though it’s a Francophone country, you can get by as an Anglophone because many people here speak English (don’t believe the guidebooks that say 80% of the country is illiterate – that’s just ngo workers trying to keep their cushy jobs!lol!)
If you want to travel on a budget or study French, Arabic or Wolof, SenegalStyle Budget Hostel is also the host of an all inclusive language program for $1250 a month (no meals, $1550 with meals). Nightly accommodation is $24 in dorm style quad rooms, shared living area.

Hi Sineta – your post makes me miss West Africa – I have a friend building a home in Guinea – when I visit them, that will give me a chance to explore Senegal and some of the neighboring countries. I’ll keep your hostel in mind for when I fly into Dakar (will be going overland as I head down to Guinea). Thanks!
