heading back to Luxembourg later this year, any recommendations?
That depends what you’ve already seen 🙂
If you’re into hiking, I’d say plan a few days in the region called “Mullerthal’. It’s also called Luxembourg’s “Little Switzerland” and really beautiful.
If you’re into castles and stuff, I could make you a whole list of the most interesting ones (other than the famous Vianden castle – too touristy 🙂
I work as an archaeologist in Luxembourg so I knew my way around the country.Luxembourg’s restaurants opened their terraces in April and as off next week, eating inside is also possible again midst a negative Covid-test, either PCR or selftest done in a pharmacy.
If you want to taste the best Portuguese/Luxembourgish cuisine (16 % of Luxembourg’s population is Portuguese), get to Larochette or “Fiels” in Luxembourgish. It’s a cute little town with a lovely castle throning above it and one of the biggest concentration of Portuguese restaurants.
Don’t forget to stay somewhere in the North of Luxembourg. People usually focus on the capital and the South but forget about the charming Northern countryside. Have you heard about Clervaux castle? The town of Clervaux is quite picturesque and I just love Edward Steichen’s photo-exhibition inside the castle called ‘The Family of Man’. It was first shown in the 1950s at the MoMa in New York, travelled around the world before settling definitely in Clervaux castle (Steichen was American but born in Luxembourg).
Don’t hesitate to write if you need more! I love to share things about my adopted home-country (I grew up in Belgium, close to the borders with Luxembourg)

Cynthia – thank you very very much for your detailed reply! Bummed I just left Luxembourg – would have been awesome to have met up. My sister and I were there this time – we met with one of our relatives and primarily hung around the city hopping from cafe to cafe trying to get all our eating and drinking done before 7pm! I have been to Vianden before – wasn’t to crowded when I was there; I will definitely keep your other recommendations for my next trip, and there will be more trips to Luxembourg!
