My wife and I arrived at the port of entry in Livingston Guatemala via boat from Punta Gorda Belize on 12/2000 at 5:45pm we went directly to the customs house and it was closed. A message on the door said for us to return the following morning. We had an early departure heading into the interior and when we arrived again at 7:00am (the time it was suppose to open) the customs house was still closed. After some persistent knocking the agent came to the door and processed our paper work. He made an exit stamp entry into our passports. When I qustioned him about it telling him we were entering the country (I speak Spanish)he stated that it was the correct stamp and demanded $20.00.
We had a boat waiting for us on the river, so instead of arguing, we left. We later had to have a driver we had hired have it fixed at the border en route to Copan Honduras.
So… just a word of caution.
