This is a frightening and true story of an incredible rescue of a prisoner by a family member from Dachau (Germany’s first atrocity camp) in the middle of the night in late 1938. Third Reich official Max Immanuel has already secured the proper documents to legally leave Germany but when a family member calls and requests his help in trying to rescue another family member, he has to make a potentially life threatening decision.
He faces down his own fears, the enemy and makes the journey from Munich to Dachau having to pass through numerous Nazi checkpoints. And to complicate matters during this time, he is also Jewish and his Third Reich papers have since expired. Readers will find their nerves frayed, palms sweating and on the edge of their seat when reading this part of the book.
The story that leads up to this rescue describes in detail the environment the tightening of freedoms for Jewish citizens living in Germany, post World War One. This book is based on a true story from first hand accounts the author Slonim wrote down prior to her passing in 2021 and written family history by her uncle, Julius Falk.
