Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand this is the the true and inspirational story of Louis Zamperini – track star, 1936 Olympian and World War II hero. Author Laura Hillenbrand followed up with her first book “Seabiscuit” by spending seven years of her life researching this book in such detail that when asked about his own life, Louis sometimes defers to “Laura” as the authority about his own life!
The impetus for this book came when during her research of Seabiscuit – she kept spotting articles about Louis winning races next to articles about Seabiscuit. Louis’s life reads like a movie; from surviving 47 days in a raft in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after mechanical failure dropped his plane into the “brink”, then after 33 days drifting an attack by a Japanese fighter plane, and then 2.5 years as a POW. This is the story of how one man survives such incredible odds and ultimately makes peace with his captors. At 95, Louis is still living (gave up skateboarding at age 81) – and resides in the Hollywood Hills (Los Angeles) – Note, Louis has since died.
