We were highly satisfied with Roberto’s Oaxaca Tours. He offers a number of specialized tours. Roberto is an excellent driver and guide who *really knows* the Oaxaca scene. He speaks fluent English. His tours are setup for travelers, not for himself. And that is a big difference. Google him and be sure to book his services far in advance as he is in high demand.
Looking for a cool space to hang out while in Oaxaca? Check out Convivio located within a short walk from the center of town. This is a co-working space attracting a number of International visitors. They host a select fun events each month including live music. Not in the mood to work? Come hang out at the bar! Our friend Ian of Where Sidewalks End is a partner of Convivio. Oaxaca Times is a free newspaper that is a great source of local events and information. You can pick these up at several locations in the zocalo.
Lonely Planet Mexico is probably the best travel guide that we used for Mexico. It costs approximately $26.95 but is well worth the price. It is incredibly detailed. Lonely Planet’s rating system for hotels and restaurants is generally very accurate. The cheap hotels listed are just that, cheap. Compared to the prices in the United States, expensive hotels in Oaxaca can be quite reasonable.
Triple A’s guide to Mexico is not as detailed as the other two books mentioned above. Its hotels and restaurants listed are more limited. It does however provide good information about attractions.

Thanks Larry. We put a lot of time into this guide and hopefully will revisit Oaxaca later this year.
