Hotels in Colima range from dingy to better then average. We initially list the cheapest hotels below, and then some that we recommend for travelers with slightly larger budgets.
Hotel La Merced is a clean, cheap and comfortable place to stay. During the hot and humid months, they even have a small “kiddies” pool available on their front lawn. Be sure to look at the rooms first – the best ones are in the back of the hotel. Hotel La Merced is located at Hidalgo 188, one half block west of Jardin Nunez. It is located on a narrow street. All rooms have a private bath and fan. Most open into narrow courtyards. For more information call Phone Number (312) 2 69 69.
Casa de Huespedes is located at Morelos 265 near the Jardin Nunez. Features 12 guest rooms, some with a common bath, some with a private bath. Sometimes the rooms won’t be cleaned until later in the day. For more information call phone (312) 2 34 67.
Hotel Flamingos is located at Avenida Rey Coliman 18, also very close to the Jardin Nunez. Its prices are comparable to the above hotels. The 56 rooms are clean and modern. All rooms have a bath and fan. An upper floor offers some views of the city. Note: the rooms on the side away from the street are a bit quieter. There is also a small restaurant on the ground floor. For more information call (312) 2 25 25.
We recommend the following two hotels:
Hotel America is probably the best deal (one traveler recently informed me that the price has gone up and is now more expensive) and nicest place to stay in Colima. The prices are still quite reasonable. Features 75 rooms, all air conditioned (a real nice plus in the tropical climate). Some of the rooms have high wood beamed ceilings, all have color TV.
On site there are also steam baths, a swimming pool, a restaurant (across from the lobby) and free parking in the parking lot. Laundry services are available. Note: in the parking look for the large mango tree peeking over the fence – which when in season mango fruits will hang over above the edge of the parking lot. These are a treat to eat in early spring. Ignore the hyped up dog on the other side of the fence that yaps at you when you look his way.
At night note, the pretty colored moths, and other insects that congregate on the outside walls of this hotel. In a tropical climate insects are every where, especially at night.
Lastly, the front desk staff are very courteous and helpful to the tourist.
Hotel Ceballos (Best Western) is located on the north side of the main Zocalo. You can’t miss it when you are walking around the central plaza. This is a good place to stay because it is centrally located, but it didn’t look quite as clean to me, as the above mentioned Hotel America. The building dates from 1880, and remarkably has survived numerous earthquakes. It has been the home to three governors of the state of Colima. Features 63 rooms, most with high ceilings and french-style windows that open onto small balconies. Most of the rooms are air conditioned. The ones with fan only are a bit cheaper then the air conditioned rooms. For more information call (312) 2 44 44.
Hotel Maria Isabel Blvd. Camino Real & Av. Felipe Sevilla del Rio is located about a mile from the center of town. Phone Number: (312) 312-6262. Nice gardens, a soccer field and a pond are located on site. This is a pretty nice place to stay. Visit: www.hotelmariaisabel.com.mx
Motel Los Candiles is located away from the center of town on Highway 54, otherwise known as the Guadalajara Highway. The rooms are clean and well kept up. Features 3 stories. Only some of the rooms are air conditioned. All rooms have TV. For more information call (312) 2 32 12.
