Taipei 101 was completed in 2004 and was the world’s tallest building for five years until that record was obliterated by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. From base to the spire on the top the Taipei 101 stand 1,671 feet (approximately 509 meters). Based on its location in the city, it dominates the skyline – towering above hundreds of ‘short’ buildings. Visitors can enjoy good views on clear days by visiting the observation floor and deck on the uppermost reaches of the building. From the ground floor take the elevator to the 5th floor where you can purchase tickets (during busy times, consider purchasing a priority pass for about 2x the cost for much quicker access to the top).
The elevator is super fast, if you suffer from motion related ailments your ailments might be induced on the ride from the 5th floor to the 87th floor – which takes about 50 seconds! If conditions permit (not to windy) the outside deck will be open or perhaps only part of the outside deck. Great views of the city and the surrounding areas. If its clear and you are visiting during the morning or afternoon check out the large shadow the building casts.
A massive steel pendulum (damper) can be viewed from the upper floors. This object sways during occurrences that might cause the building to move (high winds, earthquakes etc). This damper even has it’s own mascot, the Damper Baby!
For those looking to view the Taipei 101 from further away a highly recommended hike is the Elephant Mountain hiking trail. Take the red line metro to the Xiangshan stop and follow the signs leading to the trail. The trail climbs via a series of very steep steps – reaching several lookouts directly onto Taipei 101 and parts of Taipei.
