El Fin del Mundo, or in English, the End of the World. Such is an appropriate phrase to describe the southernmost city on the entire planet. Several airlines including Aerolíneas Argentinas, TAM & LAN Airlines fly to the airport – the primary connector city is Buenos Aires. Ushuaia’s tiny airport is located only about a 10 minute drive from downtown.
If you spend any amount of time here, it is helpful if you enjoy seafood! A number of restaurants serve a variety of fresh seafood – including the popular giant crab. Some restaurants have tanks of live crab in front of their entrance – these are often stops for tourists to admire. Several museums are worth checking out while in town, the Prison Museum, the Museum of the End of the World (covers a wide range of topics from humans to wildlife), the Antigua Casa, a look into early life in Ushuaia and the Museo Yámana (a look into the life of the indigenous peoples of the region).
The town is fairly compact although it is certainly more spread out then in earlier years. Several activities can be arranged while in town. The trail head to Martial Glacier is a short taxi ride from central Ushuaia. A small cafe with limited hours is located at the edge of the trail head. Allow at least two hours to make this round trip journey – up to some of the tongues of the glacier flowing down the mountains and then back to the parking lot.
Another trip well worth your while is to the Beagle Channel on the Paludine (a small sailboat). Tickets can be arranged next to the port (a number of tour operators are located in small huts here). This excursion is a great way to easily see Penguins, Cormorants and other birds in their natural habitat.
And don’t forgot to visit the nearby (within 12 km) Tierra del Fuego National Park. The views here are memorable and there are plenty of hiking opportunities.
