A representative for Tam Airlines recently contacted me to promote their trips from the USA to Brazil. They offer a number of trips from the USA to Brazil – flying to numerous destinations within the country including Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Brasilia. Doing a cursory check on prices I found a round trip from New York to Rio de Janeiro for under $700. And from Miami for closer to $600. That isn’t so bad considering some of the round trip flights I’ve had my eye on to Europe lately!
For long haul flights I’ve always found a number of South American destinations to be good value flights from the states. I have flown to Peru a number of times for at the time less than round trip published fares from some west coast cities to the east coast.
Brazil is beautiful – perhaps that should be the country’s motto. And it is diverse both with people and landscape. Born and raised in California and having lived here all my life I have been introduced to cultures and races from around the world. When I was in Brazil about 4 years ago I thought I might have been in California – seeing locals who had moved to the country from numerous destinations from around the world.
On that trip I visited Sao Paulo (met a friend who was backpacking through Brazil for several months) and then he and I took a 16-hour bus ride to see and experience the awe inspiring Iguazu Waterfalls bordering Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Like Victoria Falls in southern Africa Iguazu Falls command an imposing presence – one that is best absorbed by staying in the area multiple days. The falls are so spread out – there is great hiking on both the Brazilian and Argentina sides, and one can even take a boat close to their thundering drops.
