Charleston Heritage Federation Presents a Full Calendar of Events
CHARLESTON, S.C., Feb. 22, 2015 – This spring, the Charleston Heritage Federation celebrates the season with a variety of fresh events that will breathe life and provide insight into some of the nation’s most well preserved cultural institutions. Listed below is a selection of events ranging from the celebration of the 68th Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens to the 12th Annual Charleston Antiques Show to an intimate luncheon with the International Editor-at-Large of Vogue, Hamish Bowles.
Lecture Series presented by The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, January – April 2015
The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture is presenting a 2015 lecture series on various topics ranging from black comedy to discussions of slavery and freedom. The Avery Research Center is located on the site of the former Avery Normal Institute, which from 1865–1954 served as a school for Charleston’s African American community to train students for professional careers and leadership roles. Now a part of the College of Charleston, the Avery Research Center preserves the legacy of the Avery Normal Institute and educates the community on the history and culture of African Americans in Charleston and the rest of the state. The Avery Research Center holds nearly 4,000 primary and secondary sources that document the history, traditions, legacy and influence of African Americans on the broader culture. The Avery Research Center provides tours, hosts workshops, presents lectures and spotlights local and national talents in various forms of creative expression.
2015 Lecture Series “South Carolinians You Should Know” presented by the South Carolina Historical Society, February 2 – March 10, 2015
The South Carolina Historical Society will host a series of lectures highlighting “South Carolinians You Should Know.” Highlights include Robert Mills, a Charlestonian who famously designed the Washington Monument and Anne Pamela Cunningham, a South Carolinian who salvaged Mount Vernon through donations and the creation of “The Mount Vernon Ladies Association,” which continues to manage the property today. Lectures will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6-7p.m. at the historic First Baptist Church in downtown Charleston.
Camellia Walks presented by Middleton Place, February 7 – March 21, 2015
America’s Oldest Landscaped Gardens, the 65-acre Middleton Place is home to the 1786 Reine des Fleurs, one of the first camellias planted in the United States. The walks will kick off with a workshop on February 7th and a lecture on February 8th led by master gardeners. Each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Middleton Place will offer special guided tours of the hundreds of camellia varieties from the original to the “new” garden of the 1950s.
The Constable Stradivarius Concert presented by The Charleston Library Society, March 6, 2015
The Library Society presents an extraordinary “salon” experience in the intimate and acoustically sound Oldest Library in the South. Thanks to the generosity of Wilfred and John Constable, owners of a 1686 Stradivarius violin, guests will enjoy a memorable evening of music celebrating the Library Society’s remarkable contributions to Charleston over the last 267 years. The internationally recognized concertmaster of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Yuriy Bekker, will serve as the guest violin for the evening.
The Gibbes Museums’ Art of Design Presents Hamish Bowles Luncheon, International Editor-at-Large, Vogue, March 13, 2015
As the International Editor-at-Large for Vogue, Hamish Bowles is recognized as one of the most respected authorities on the worlds of fashion and interior design. In this springtime luncheon, Bowles will engage attendees with a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the fashion elite. In April 2001, while creative consultant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Bowles organized and mounted the internationally renowned and critically acclaimed Costume Institute exhibition, “Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years—Selections from the John F. Kennedy Library Museum.” Bowles has an extensive private collection of historic haute couture and fashionably significant clothes. He has lent pieces to exhibitions at several museums including the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Musée de la Mode et du Textile at the Louvre. The event takes place at the Charleston Marriott at 170 Lockwood Blvd.
68th Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens presented by the Historic Charleston Foundation, March 19 – April 19, 2015
This series of award-winning tours showcases the city’s distinctive architecture, history, gardens, and culture of Charleston’s Old and Historic District. Daily afternoon and evening tours provide a rare glimpse inside the private houses and gardens, dating from Colonial days through the Antebellum period and into the 20th century. Other events include Picnic & Oyster Roasts, Barbecue & Brew, Mimosas at Middleton Place, “Food for Thought” Luncheon Lectures, Harbor of History Boat Cruises, Wine Tastings, Morning History Walks, and entertaining concerts, including the popular Bluegrass Jam at the Charleston Music Hall.
12th Annual Charleston Antiques Show presented by the Historic Charleston Foundation, March 20 – 22, 2015; Preview Party, March 19, 2015
The celebrated Charleston Antiques Show at Memminger Auditorium, 56 Beaufain Street, features approximately 30 dealers from across the United States. Exhibitors showcase an extraordinary range of fine and decorative arts representing an array of styles and periods including American and Continental furniture, silver, ceramics, glass, jewelry, rugs, textiles, paintings and prints. The glamorous Preview Party offers delicious cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as well as exclusive access to the show before doors open to the public.
Spring Wine Strolls presented by Middleton Place, April 1 – May 27, 2015
Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark, is home to America’s oldest landscaped gardens and a lively stableyard that is home to free-grazing sheep, cashmere goats, Belgian draft horses, guinea hogs, peacocks and majestic water buffalo. Visitors are invited to sip and stroll in a different garden location each week while sampling old and new world wines. The strolls take place every week from 6-8p.m.
Easter Eggstravaganza presented by Middleton Place, April 4, 2015
Dressed in Easter finery with baskets in hand, youngsters are invited to search for eggs in the famous Middleton Place Gardens and take them to the Stableyards to be dyed. The event also boasts colonial games, an egg roll and egg toss game, classic stories and Easter crafts. The event starts at 10:30a.m.
“Hands On” Rice Planting Programming presented by Middleton Place, April 24 & 25, 2015
Visitors are invited to join a costumed interpreter and to discover how Carolina Gold rice was planted on Lowcountry plantations. Guests will learn about the African origins of rice and its cultivation in South Carolina in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Spoleto Festival Finale + Beer Garden presented by Middleton Place, June 7, 2015
Guests are invited to picnic on the Greensward at Middleton Place in the afternoon and enjoy the 3rd Annual Beer Garden with local beer, bites and music. The Beer Garden opens at 3:30p.m. followed by an unforgettable performance on the main stage with a closing fireworks display.
Annual Sheep Shearing presented by Middleton Place, May 2, 2015
The Middleton Place Gulf Coast sheep receive an annual shearing during demonstrations using traditional steel blade shears in the Plantation Stableyards. Costumed interpreters will be on hand to educate visitors about the Gulf Coast breed, shearing and wool processing.
Carolina Day presented by South Carolina Historical Society, June 28, 2015
Carolina Day celebrates the American victory at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28, 1776, where Colonels William Moultrie and William Thomson repelled assaults by the Royal Navy and the British Army. The first Carolina Day was celebrated in 1777, and the Palmetto Society and the South Carolina Historical Society continue the commemoration today.

Very good article, Dave. Wish we could be there for the events this year. Charleston along with Savannah and St. Augustine are our 3 favorite southern cities. Every December after Christmas we escaped NYC’s cold winter months and drove to New Smyrna Beach, FL. Going to Florida and coming back on I-95 to Manhattan in April we always stopped in Charleston for 2-nights to enjoy the flavor of the city. The cuisine is outstanding, An evening walk along Battery Row or a stroll on Rainbow Row were always a pleasure for us.
