This book is a fast, engaging and at times humorous read – highlighting stories from the author’s childhood trips gallivanting with his family around the world. They visit exotic destinations – remote islands in the middle of the South Pacific and fish in Piranha infested waters – always in search of “local” non touristy experiences.
The author’s father was infected with wanderlust, taking trips without making many plans and always bringing along a keen interest in fishing. This formula often combined to create memorable experiences.
The first story begins when the author was 12 years of age and the final story in the book ends when he is 38. At age 12 he and his younger sister and their parents make there way to Vanuatu where stories emerge about taking an inner island flight on a plane seemingly held together with duck tape and a rare glimpse into the “naghol” tradition otherwise known as “land diving” where locals dive off of a wooden structure with only soil below.
After a lifetime of travels the author’s father makes one more trip with his son – detailed in the final chapter in the book. They visit Costa Rica where the author reflects on their travels as a family and realizes something profound, “home is not a place – it’s a feeling, a sense of belonging, the freedom to be yourself, comfort in the darkest hours, unstoppable joy…”
