Every once in a while during my Internet browsing I stumble upon favorite quotes or short clips. These two clips reference “perspective” and “fear” the latter of which is often buried by the former after one has built up their “travel resume”. This first quote comes from Alexandra Vasiliu of Watermelon Nomads in describing her thoughts on travel experiences as well her travel website.
I believe now that the richness of a travel experience is given by the ability of switching perspectives. We live in a world of cliches, where our image and feelings about a place usually come either from a sensationalist media, or from a greedy tourism industry, which both thrive on our ignorance. We have set out to undermine media fear-driven cliches and avoid all-inclusive resorts, and if this is something you are about too, we hope to be able to help, or at least inspire.
This next quote from a Forbes interview highlighting “fear” in America comes from Ken Fisher, author of “The Ten Roads To Riches” and long time Forbes columnist.
I think the biggest problem in America is insecurity. In a variety of ways, America is obsessed with fears. Fears that we’re not good enough, that America is falling behind the world, fears that the stock market’s terrible, derivative swaps are toxic. As one of my sons likes to say, ever since Sept. 11, we’ve been selling fear in America at a heavy level, and people have become obsessed with buying the fear.
