I’m not one to enjoy rain – really, ever. Today was an exception. Joe, our driver for the day from Wayoutback Safaris pulled up nice and early at 630am, making the rounds of hotels and hostels in downtown Darwin. We were off for a day of swimming – heavy rain was not going to stop us.
Our destination was Litchfield National Park located in the bush about a 90 minutes drive south of Darwin. Our first stop was the impressive Florence Falls for a swim in the very large pool that forms at its base. This is one of the few places in the park you can swim without fear of crocodiles being in the water.
Adventurous swimmers during high waters can swim to the base of the falls but the current is so strong you are quickly pushed back to the front of the pool despite it being quite some distance from where the actual falls plummet down.
Buley Rockhole was nearly overflowing and parts of this normally quiet stream were raging. Finding one of the safe holes far from the rapids in a storm that was dropping buckets we all jumped in. The water was actually warmer than the air. Two elderly nudes (looked like characters) showed up in colorful hats – they were entertaining, didn’t speak English and kept jumping in and out of the water.
I do a lot of solo travel – grudgingly sometimes. So I welcome days when I am around travelers – I enjoy the bonds one makes with fellow travelers. One day trips are just a touch of this – multi day trips are much better for creating memorable experiences. Hardships only add to the bonds created.
Group adventure experiences that are wholly positive and memorable create closer bonds between people when traveling and only adds to the shared passion that develops between individuals about a particular region. Our trip to Litchfield National Park was just a taste of this.
