Soar, The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying by Tom Bunn
Author, Tom Bunn is also a retired commercial airline pilot, licensed therapist and founder of SOAR, a program to conquer your fear of flying that he setup and has been running since 1982. His initial work with fear of flying began in the 1970’s with PanAm Airlines. Fortunately we have never had to deal with a fear of flying, but for those who do, this book is a must read.
Quotes from those who have successfully overcome their fears of flying are sprinkled throughout the book. Captain Tom pinpoints and highlights various fears that make flying so unappealing to many – including turbulence, not being in control and being unable to escape. This book is a road map to overcoming these fears, providing the necessary tools, techniques and exercises.
Tom has worked with thousands of clients and takes an analytical approach to solving people’s flying fears. He knows all the excuses to avoid flying and addresses some of these. He also knows all the factors before and during a flight that causes anxiety and he offers ways to regulate and control these fears. Enter the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise. He outlines what this is, when and how to use it; and explains that this exercise is also valuable in the days and weeks leading up to one’s flight.
His program does not just offer temporary relief, for example, the possibility of flying fear free on just one flight – but rather leads to an overall shift where one’s fears are removed for a lifetime. The positive responses from many of his former clients are testimony to its long term power.
