Driving through Hollywood numerous times I’ve always wondered what it would be like to stand in one of these “sidewalk lines” late at night. Lines for nightclubs, lines for dark signless establishments with tough looking large people in front, lines for comedy shows, lines for Improv and lines for bars. I was standing in one of such lines this evening – in front of the Upright Citizens Brigade waiting to see the Swarm, 4 gentleman who perform here once a month.
While waiting in this line I met Julio – a Renaissance man who is involved in multiple industries; he is an actor, has a real estate business (an office 1 block from Rodeo Drive is not a bad place to be) and owns a production company.
Oh and he has recently bottled a family hot sauce recipe. He gave me a bottle – it tastes like Tex Mex with some spice, but not overwhelmingly hot. Unlike some hot sauces, refreshingly you can taste the flavor rather than the heat. Julio will call this sauce, Formosa. Look for it coming soon!
Earlier in the week I popped into the Groundlings, classic intimate LA Improv. Taking cues from the audience, a director sets the scene and the actors roll with it – funny at times, often ridiculous, and certainly quite spontaneous. One finds himself creating his own scenarios in the audience and one wonders if he would have the guts and the wit to take these cues and run with them successfully – at the same time being funny, engaging and connecting with the audience. This is certainly not an easy task on the spot.
