Kotor Montenegro is truly one of the gems of this small country. This picturesque charming town is located along Europe’s southern most Fjord. Tall mountains rise from the salt water bay which on clear days is cobalt and deep blue. The entire old city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains narrow stone walkways, boutique shops and outdoor seating at restaurants line the small courtyards. Homestays are quite popular here – one way you can find accommodation is to simply ask shop owners. Chances are either they or their friends offers rooms for rent.
A number of activities are available outside of the old town. If its warm chances are many people will be in the water. There are no big beaches near town but there are plenty of places to access the clear water. A hike to the top of St Ivan’s Fortress (high above town) is well worth it – but take your time, there are over 1200 steps to reach the top. Slightly further outside of Kotor is the small town of Perast, gateway to two very scenic islands – accessible mere minutes by boat from shore.

Wow. That looks amazing. I’m headed to the Balkans in the summer and Kotor just got added to the list. Thanks for the writeup, Dave!

Yea- Kotor is a must stop – especially if you are already going to be in the Balkans. Its a part of Europe that many people from the states have never heard of or skip over for Croatia.

Kotor is one of my favorite places – the evening I arrived, the city was in the middle of a power outage, so the entire place was lit by candlelight. Easily one of the most beautiful things I have witnessed!

We loved wandering those steep streets – we were there later in summer so it was peak fruit season. The climb above town on the steep trail was also well worth the effort for the magnificent views below 🙂
