Turkey is one of the world’s most popular destinations for tourists, and it’s easy to understand why. The year round sunshine and balmy climes while its European neighbours are battling the biting cold is just one. But the warmth doesn’t just come from the sun; it is also exuded from the Turkish people, who are some of the friendliest and most hospitable people on the planet.
From the Blue Mosque and spice bazaar in Istanbul to the Ottoman houses and ancient relics in Antalya, the country is steeped in history and culture. Turkey is a vast country and there is much to see and do, but the South West coast is one of the most popular areas with tourists. So what is it about this area that holds a special magnetism over travellers and holidaymakers alike?
Dalaman
Aptly known as the Turquoise Coast, Dalaman’s glittering coastline is garnished with long white stretches of sand, hidden coves and beautiful bays – all set against the backdrop of crystalline sea.
The breath taking rock-cut Lycian tombs are not to be missed, and a half day spent wallowing in the mud baths makes for a very memorable experience. With a striking combination of deep blue, bright turquoise and brilliant green, you won’t need telling twice to visit Olu Deniz, one of the world’s most photographed lagoons.
Dalaman is also well situated for a day trip to Ephesus, home to remarkable ancient Roman ruins; and the flourishing city of Marmaris, with wisps of shisha smoke and colourful bazaars that will immerse you fully into the vibrant Turkish culture.
Bodrum
Has South West Turkey tickled your taste buds? Bitez beach is renowned for being one of the most beautiful coves on the peninsula, with its warm waters and sandy beaches making it a great place to unwind. Or, brave the chilly waters of Bardakci Cove to swim with exotic marine life in the crystal clear sea.
Culture vultures will be in their element at St Peter’s castle, which sprawls across an impressive thirty thousand square feet. A stunning example of medieval architecture, it promises to astound whether viewed from land or sea – and it’s just as good on the inside. Check out the shipwreck displays at the Museum of Underwater Archaeology and enjoy the gorgeous views of Bodrum marina.
