“Visa Wellington on a Plate”, set for August 9 – 25, becoming the largest culinary festival in New Zealand
Santa Monica, CA – July 2, 2013– Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city, has a boasting culinary scene led by stars such as Peter Gordon, a rapidly developing craft beer industry, and an edgy new world style that thrives on innovation. Thus, it is no wonder that it is about to host what is becoming the largest culinary festival in New Zealand; the fifth annual Wellington region-wide culinary celebration, Visa Wellington on a Plate (VWOAP), to take place August 9th through August 25th 2013.
In five years, the program has tripled to include 110 of the Wellington region’s top eateries. The festival will go on for 17 days and will include 113 festival events among which night markets, day trips, gourmet tasting events, food trucks, hands-on dumpling and pizza making, master classes (with Josh Emett, Peter Gordon, Maggie Beer and Dean Brettschneider among others) and hotly contested ‘battle of the burgers’, baking and top chef competitions and more.
Highlights
Beervana – the festival begins with a big weekend (August 9 – 10) celebrating craft beer. Over 200 local brews and food matches compiled by top chefs will take the archetypical beer fest experience to another level.
Prison Gate to Plate – 2013 inauguration fine dining experience will take place the opening weekend (August 9 – 10), created and served behind bars of the Rimutaka Prison. The 70 count dinner will be delivered by the prison inmates and Chef Martin Bosley, who has spent the past seven months tutoring six prisoners in kitchen arts.
Dine Wellington – the festival centerpiece are two weeks when 110 restaurants will offer lunchtime and dinner set menus inspired by iconic regional flavors and products.
Themed events
Over the 17 days of the festival, themed events will include:
The Sugar Club Retrospective at Capitol restaurant is a blast from the past harking back to the 80’s menus in Peter Gordon’s original Wellington establishment.
Wellington’s film central, Miramar’s Coco at Roxy Theater, will hold An Unexpected Party in the Middle of Middle-earth, making merry with a Shire supper of Pudding Lane pork pies, seed cakes and Tuatara ales accompanied by song and merry-making.
Zealandia: Karori Sanctuary, a dinner date with New Zealand’s famous flightless parrot Sirocco and a two-course meal inspired by the natural kai / food from the forest.
Lamb-connoisseurs will enjoy the woolshed lunch on Pirinoa Station, a 16,000 hectare working farm in the Wairarapa.
