Has anyone taken a boat from Iquitos Peru down the Amazon into Brazil – I know this is a very great distance depending on how far you go – I would probably go to Manaus and then fly out from there to Montevideo or Uruagay – has anyone taken a boat from Iquitos to Manaus – and if so how long can it expect to take – depending on the type of boat…
I am planning on taking a trip to South America this April and May.
I am thinking of visiting Bolivia and Argentina – any recommendations for “must sees”?

arielbortzI visited Buenos Aires lots of times, so here are my tips:
- Go to learn some tango in la Viruta
- Eat lots of meat, asados and choripanes
- It’s nicer in spring
- Stay in a hostel called Pax Hostel, it’s next to all the nice things in San Telmo, which is my favourite place in BA. It’s also next to the subway.
- Go to Palermo (specially “los bosques de Palermo” and palermo soho).
- Take a trip to Tigre.
- Go to the MALBA museum (contemporary art).
- Visit Recoleta.
- Visit Puerto Madero.
- Enjoy the night life! It’s awesome.
Those are the first things that i can remember
Ariel – cool, thanks for the tips. I’ll check out that hostel next time I’m in Buenos Aires – I was in Argentina last month for the 2nd time – mostly around the Foz Iguazu area. We had a great time in BA and hit most of the items on your list.

National CapitolThanks Alisa – I’ll put those items on my list for when I visit Bogota! I remember the gold museum in San Jose Costa Rica as being especially interesting – ties into my interest in gold mining as well 🙂
Dan CI did the whole boat down the Amazon thing, all the way from Iquitos to Belem on the Atlantic coast and it was an absolutely amazing trip. We did it on the hammock deck (you buy a hammock and sling it on the deck…) which is the cheapest way to do it, but so long as you don’t mind slumming it for a few days (4 days IIRC from Iquitos to Manaus) it’s ok.
Manaus itself is ok, but nothing special. There are a few things to see and do (this blog mentions some) but a couple of days is probably plenty. From there you’re looking at a long old flight to Uruguay though – probably with two changes in Brasilia and Sao Paulo…

Dan – thanks for posting this – I’ve always wanted to boat from Iquitos down to the Atlantic Coast – hammock sounds great, I have no problem roughing it. Only thing I would be worried about would be getting bit by things that cause problems later – any problems with bugs when you did this trip? What time of year were you there?
