Rajjaprabha Dam Thailand – Most tourists who visit the Surat Thani area of Central Thailand are stopping over on their way to the island of Koh Samui. However if you find yourself in this area one attraction you should not miss is the Rajjaprabha Dam (also called Chieo Lan Dam). It is secluded and undiscovered by tourists. Huge limestone rocks and islands rise from its waters similar to what is found in Halong Bay in Vietnam and several water locations in China including the Li River near Guilin.
Several quiet bays are entirely surrounded by these formations. The dam is located in the Khao Sok National Park. Vans leave from Surat Thani and take about 90 minutes over the 80+ KM distance. Be sure to hire a boatman for a several hour trip including a swimming stop. Some of the boatmen used to live in the villages that are now buried under 300 feet of water and their stories of life before the dam was built are invaluable. Probably the connotation of a “dam” keeps some people away as it is not an “original” natural attraction – but once you are there the natural beauty quickly kills that type of thinking.
