Petra, Jordan is one of the world’s great historical regions and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Petra attracts visitors from around the world – especially since it was voted as one of the “New Seven Wonders” of the World in 2007. The original ruins date from over 2000 years ago and the most well preserved of the ruins on site is the amazing “treasury” or Al Khazneh (in Arabic). To reach this ruin, allow 20-30 minutes walking mostly all downhill from the main entrance. Half of this walk is on a dirt road and the other half is through a narrow Siq (or canyon) with its steep walls. Horses and horse drawn carriages are typically available to give you rides for an extra fee on top of the general admission fee. During the tourist season it can be very crowded at the treasury, usually starting around 8 to 830am.
The first glimpse of the treasury is breathtaking as you view it partially through the narrow canyon walls. While many visitors make this their only stop to the ruins, if you really want to get a feel for Petra you need to spend at least 1.5 to 2 full days here. There are many hiking trails and other ruins well worth your visit. Besides the treasury, highlights include the Coliseum, High Place of Sacrifice, Colonnaded Street, and the beautiful “monastery”.
Recommended accommodation: Moevenpick Resort Petra – this luxury hotel brand delivers an oasis of quiet while at the same time is conveniently located within only a short walk of the main entrance to Petra. Great place to meet visitors around the world – especially lounging around their outdoor pool some warm summer afternoon.
