I’ve known Emil Tedeschi for a number of years, owner of Napa Valley’s tiny Tedeschi Family Winery, not to be confused with the Tedeschi Winery, Maui – which Emil also co-founded. He has mentioned the Tedeschi Winery in Verona Italy more than a few times. So with my brother living in Verona and describing my upcoming trip to visit him, Emil jumped at the opportunity to come along. Emil has co-piloted a single engine plane – 16 hours from San Francisco to Honolulu decades ago and then on to the South Pacific but this was his first time to Europe. So I was very much looking forward to showing him some of my favorite haunts.
And as it were, the other Tedeschi Winery is located only about 12 minutes from where my brother is living!
We were fortunate to meet with the owner and winemaker himself, Riccardo Tedeschi. His family has a long tradition of owning vineyards with their family records relating to vineyards dating back to 1630. They currently produce about 40,000 cases annually and distribute to 30 countries. The winery is located in an interesting area – right in a residential neighborhood. It is quite the operation with many large tanks and wooden casks on site.
Amarone is a major part of their production and is the wine they are most known for; they have a large drying warehouse located about a kilometer from the winery where certain varietals are left to dry in their picking baskets for 1 to 3 months. The volume of juice drops up to 50% before the final processing. Riccardo gets to California several times a year for wine related business – I hope to give him the “insiders” tour of Napa Valley the next time he visits and of course we will stop by Emil’s little winery in Calistoga.

Casual conversation over excellent wine!

Awww, the meeting of the two Tedeschis! I wish I could have been on that trip with you guys. Sounds like a great winery to visit.
And um, nice subtlety with sliding in the Tedeschi sign in the video. And someone find John una donna Italiana per favore! Haha. 🙂

Hehe – no luck for John yet! He’s way busy with his software system which is doing very well. Eventually he will have to outsource the tech support and focus on developing the software and promoting it.
Yea it was neat to finally see the “other” Tedeschi Winery – I’ve now visited all three – Calistoga, Maui and Verona Italy! There is a Teldeschi in Sonoma County California which people often confuse with Tedeschi – but no relation.

Has John found a woman yet? I can’t imagine that he has not!

No – not yet, he’s still looking! He’s in Kazan Russia all this week competing in in the International swimming championships – and hanging out with Olympic hopefuls for Rio!
