We are still trying to catch up on blog posts as its been a hectic past couple of weeks!
Trying to avoid Bondi like the plague on the last day of 2012 we headed straight for Coogee. So did many others – there were more views of people than sand. Walking up the coastal walk I stumbled upon Wylies, boasting public swimming baths perched on the edge of the cliffs with its own sea pool built into the existing sandstone rock next to the crashing waves. These are Australia’s oldest public baths, dating back over 100 years. On such a crowded day this was the perfect escape – rocks for sunbathing and a huge pool for swimming.
The Sydney New Year’s fireworks are known and watched throughout the globe – as the host of the first big New Years celebration to ring in every new year. Despite a very poor observation spot from behind the Opera House the fireworks did not disappoint. The “kiddie” works rang in the 9pm hour with booms echoing against the tall buildings and dazzling explosions across the city.
I would like to say I partied like a mad man at Circle Quay with the pulsating music and the hipsters with their dark glasses and baseball caps barely perched on their heads, but I promptly fell asleep on a grassy knoll somewhere – only to be awakened a few minutes prior to midnight by vibrant cheers and sirens blaring across the city. I sat up bleary eyed to be greeted by colorful lights exploding off the top of buildings, red lights in the sky popping over the famous Harbour Bridge and massive displays of light over Darling Harbor and the Opera House.
