This past Thursday we were invited to an event at Universal Studios – featuring long time actress Betty White (90 years young and looking great!). She was there to receive the “Who-Manitarian of the Year” award – a play on words tied into the holiday season and the Christmas Grinch. Besides being an accomplished actress, Ms. White has also dedicated her life to the welfare of animals.
Her lifelong dedication to animal welfare has earned her the title of “Ambassador to the Animals” in a ceremony in which she was honored by the City of Los Angeles. Featured in Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax,” the “Hot in Cleveland” television star was recently named Chairman of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, in which she served on the board since 1974 and as Zoo Commissioner for eight years. Ms. White also serves as President Emeritus of Morris Animal Foundation, a world leader in funding groundbreaking veterinary research.
It was especially neat to see Ms. White in person – she reminds me of when I was a child watching the Golden Girls on TV with my Grandmother – I grew up without a television and the only time I watched it was at my Grandparents house. I still do not have one – but I remember my Grandmother in the mid 1980’s being glued to one of the few TV programs whose names I know – the Golden Girls. Ms. White is the last living of the Golden Girls – a throwback to another era.
This award dedication and tree lighting ceremony kicks off 19 days of “Grinchmas” – a family friendly attraction at Universal Studios that runs this weekend and daily from December 15th through December 31st (included in the price of the park admission). When you visit Universal during this time period stop by the Grinchmas display – featuring real snow (yes, in Los Angeles!). Children… and adults are welcome to play in the snow. And be sure to check out the Christmas tree – it is 60 feet tall but curved as only you would find a tree in one of Dr. Seuss’s children’s books.
The Grinch and the “Who-ville Whos” will be present to greet fans and pose for holiday photos. Universal Studios has also put together “celebrity readings” from the book, “The Grinch stole Christmas” in conjunction with Grinchmas and. Well known actors and actresses including Nia Vardalos (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) and Allison Sweeney (“The Biggest Loser”) on December 8; Jillian Michaels (“The Biggest Loser”) on December 9; Blair Underwood and star of “Community,” Yvette Nicole Brown on December 15; Tia Mowry-Hardict on December 20; Diego Boneta (“Rock of Ages”) on December 22; Chris Gorham (“Covert Affairs”) on December 25; Camryn Manheim (“The Ghost Whisperer”) on December 27; and Dot Marie Jones (“Glee”) on December 31, among others.
