Taiwan is often called the cycling capital of Asia and for good reason.
The country has some of the best cycling infrastructure in the world, including dedicated bike lanes that run pretty much all around the island, and a great cycling culture that sees thousands of Taiwanese attempt to bike the round trip around the island’s circumference each year.
Taiwan is home to the Giant Manufacturing Co, the world’s largest bicycle manufacturer.
And of course, it’s an exceptionally beautiful country to bike through. With its long and beautiful coastline along the Pacific Ocean, and the high mountains and dense forests that cover its center, Taiwan is the very definition of a tropical paradise.
With most of Taiwan’s population concentrated in the west and the north, eastern Taiwan is a cyclists’ delight.
The best cycling route in this part of Taiwan starts from Kaohsiung, passes through Kenting, passes through the Zhiben and Antong Hot Springs, and ends at the world famous Taroko Gorge.
Along the way, you get to experience Taiwan’s lively night markets with their delicious street food, rejuvenating hot springs, glimpses of Taiwan’s indigenous cultures around Dawu, and some beautiful beaches.
The Pacific Ocean will be your constant companion throughout the ride. With the sea on one side, and the mountains on the other, this part of Taiwan feels a lot like doing a bike tour in Chile, or somewhere in South America. The only difference is that instead of fine Chilean wines, here you get to treat yourself to Taiwanese oolong tea, considered one of the finest in the world.
If you’re planning to do this tour, it’s always a good idea to do a guided tour rather than a self-guided tour. This is because Taiwan is still relatively new to tourism, and there can be cultural issues such as those around language. Outside of metros like Taipei, most people are not very fluent in English.
There are several specialized operators running world-class Taiwan bike tours such as Art of Bicycle Trips. You can also do your own research, and look for operators that have good reviews on review portals such as TrustPilot for their Taiwan tours. Make sure you fully understand all the inclusions and exclusions and the tour price before booking the tour.
Also make sure to compare the hotels on the route. Afterall, hotels can make or break a holiday experience.
Happy biking!
