Snowshoeing – Snowshoeing is a great alternative to some of the more extreme ways to explore the winter wilderness that surrounds Marquette. The area boasts numerous hiking trails ideal for winter outings, all waiting to be explored. Birding – Just in time for winter, Snowy Owls, native to the arctic tundra flock to Michigan in droves and can be spotted throughout the Great Lakes region. With a wingspan of nearly five feet, bright yellow eyes and a fluffy white coat, these magnificent birds are a boon for nature enthusiasts. In the wintertime throughout the Upper Peninsula , birders can also search for Northern Saw-Whet Owls, Bald Eagles, Winter Finches and Waxwings and other migrants.
Ice Fishing – Ice fishing is a time-honored sport and classic winter pastime that is not only fun, but easy for all ages to enjoy. When temperatures drop in the U.P., Marquette County’s 40+ lakes freeze over, offering great fishing opportunities for a variety of game such as Walleye, Northern Pike, Blue Gills, Crappie, Perch, Splake, Lake Trout, Burbot and Rainbows. As an added bonus, traversing the frozen waters allows anglers to reach the far corners of lakes typically inaccessible during the open water season. Favorites spots include Marquette’s Lower Harbor and Harlow Lake, as well as Teal Lake in Negaunee and the charming town of Gwinn.
